According to local police officials, the blast occurred as people were finishing their prayers at Baitus Salat Jame Mosque. Most of the injured were sent to a burn unit at a state-run hospital in nearby Dhaka, many in critical condition. Officials have stated that the blast may have been caused by a leaking pipeline, causing gas to accumulate in the mosque which was then ignited by an unknown source.
