Warning

Event

Guanajuato state authorities report that a massacre in a bar in Jaral del Progreso early in the hours of Sunday, September 27, has left at least 11 people dead. Reportedly rival criminal gangs Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel engaged in a firefight at the La Cabana del Toro in the Josefa Ortiz neighborhood. The Municipal Police and National Guard have cordoned off the area and the incident is now under investigation by the State Attorney General's Office.

Context

Fierce turf wars between the competing Santa Rosa de Lima and the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel have become a recurring scene of criminal violence in Guanajuato. In July, gunmen killed 24 people at a drug rehabilitation center in Guanajuato, marking one of the worst mass slayings since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office pledging to reduce record levels of violence.
