Warning

Event

Activists protesting violence against women set fire to a section of a government building in Mexico City on Friday, September 11. The activists, of which the majority are reported to have been females, entered a government rights commission building and started a fire inside, after which they exited the building and then continued to throw Molotov cocktails at its exterior walls. At least 13 of the activists were arrested, according to local police officials. Protests demanding justice for murdered women in cases that have not been solved or even properly investigated have been more frequent nationwide in recent weeks, with intense media coverage of the demonstrations creating momentum for the movement.

Further associated protests are likely to occur in the near term.

Advice

Those in Mexico City are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid all protests and large public gatherings, anticipate disruptions to transportation and services in areas affected by demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
