Warning

Event

Typhoon Maysak has reportedly caused heavy flooding in North Korea's eastern regions on Thursday, September 3. State media has reported that the coastal city of Wonsan has been particularly affected by heavy rainfall and associated flooding. The provinces of Kangwon and North Hamgyong have so far been the most affected by the storm. No fatalities have yet been reported. Typhoon Maysak comes a week after Typhoon Bavi struck North Korea, with the latest storm likely to set back recovery and repair efforts.

Further heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected in the near term. Disruption to transportation, utilities, and business is to be expected in affected areas.

Advice

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous. Never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
