Mexico: Damage and disruption reported amid heavy rainfall in southeast Mexico November 6

Damage and disruption have been reported in southeast Mexico as of Friday, November 6, after days of heavy rainfall caused by tropical cyclone Eta and cold front 11. At least 12 people have been reported killed, of which two died from drowning in Tabasco state and ten others killed in a landslide in the Chamula municipality of Chiapas state. Some 80,000 people have been affected by the rains in Tabasco state, where 20,000 homes have been damaged by flooding. Ten rivers have burst their banks in Tabasco, with state capital Villahermosa suffering from record flooding.

Further rainfall is expected in coming days. As such, further flooding and associated disruptions to business and transport should be anticipated.

Those in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
