Albania: Continued protests against police violence in Tirana likely through at least Dec. 13

Protests condemning a police-involved killing are likely to continue in Tirana through at least Dec. 13. Activists are protesting the killing of a Tirana resident by security forces on early Dec. 8. Demonstrations have been occurring in front of the Ministry of Interior Headquarters and the Albanian Government building since Dec. 9. Police deployed riot-control tactics, including tear gas and baton charges, after demonstrators began throwing projectiles at security forces. As many as nine police officers and at least three demonstrators have been injured.

Authorities will almost certainly heighten security during any demonstrations. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially at any protests with a large attendance. Clashes between police and gathering participants are possible.
