Armenia: Anti-government protest ongoing in central Yerevan Dec. 10

Several hundred opposition activists are currently protesting outside the Government of Armenia building at Republic Square in central Yerevan Dec. 10. The activists are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Participants have also blocked traffic on Tigran Mets Avenue, prompting police intervention; several protesters have been arrested. Police remain heavily deployed in Republic Square.

Traffic congestion and public transport disruptions are likely in the city center over the coming hours due to the protest and related security measures. There have been no reports of significant violence during the event; however, previous related gatherings have degenerated into violence after police attempted to forcefully disperse protesters. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face a significant physical threat.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution, and allow additional time for travel in central Yerevan Dec. 10. Heed the instructions of local authorities. If violence erupts nearby, leave the area immediately.
