Ghana: Fatalities reported following periods of election-related violence Dec. 7-9
Authorities report at least five killed in election-related violence across Ghana Dec. 7-9. Further clashes possible.
Event
At least five people have died in election-related violence across Ghana following the country's polls held on Dec. 7. Up to 21 incidents, including clashes involving firearms, were reported by authorities nationwide. It is currently unclear which groups were involved in the violence; however, recent elections in Ghana have remained relatively peaceful despite the fatalities. Further protests and associated gatherings are likely ahead of the possible announcement of results Dec. 9-10.
Heightened security and transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all election-related gatherings. Protesters and activists may gather near government buildings, in city or town centers, and along major road routes in Accra and other large cities.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations and election-related events as a standard security precaution. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a safe, non-governmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions and allow additional travel time near gatherings.
