Ghana: Protests and associated clashes reported in Accra, Dec. 17

Protesters, comprising activists and supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party, have gathered at the Electoral Commission's headquarters in central Accra, Dec. 17. Participants are protesting against perceived fraud during Ghana's Dec. 7 elections. Security forces have used water cannon to disperse demonstrators who have burnt debris on nearby roads; however, protesters have remained in the vicinity of the facility. There have also been unverified reports of gunfire. The NDC candidate John Mahama lost the vote to the incumbent, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Demonstrations are likely to persist through afternoon hours and may resume, Dec. 18. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are likely at all associated events. Transport disruptions are also likely.

Avoid the affected area due to the threat of violence. Monitor for updates on developments in the coming hours. Allow extra time if driving near the affected area; consider planning alternative routes around the demonstration site. If a protest forms nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Do not take photographs.
