Event
A 5.3-magnitude offshore earthquake struck in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of southern Turkey, at 1544 Dec. 5. The temblor struck approximately 49 km (30 miles) southwest of Gazipasa, Turkey at a depth of 82 km (51 miles). Light shaking was likely felt across parts of Antalya, Konya, Karaman, Mersin, Burdur, and Isparta provinces, as well as on Cyprus and Northern Cyprus. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties, though it could take several hours for authorities to conduct comprehensive damage assessments. Minor disruptions could occur during transportation shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Localized utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
