Burundi: Officials maintaining COVID-19 restrictions as of Jan. 28 /update 7
Authorities in Burundi maintaining COVID-19 international travel and domestic restrictions as of Jan. 28. Disruptions to persist.
Event
As of Jan. 28, authorities in Burundi have maintained measures put in place to limit the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) following Jan. 11 amendments. As part of measures currently in place, travelers arriving in Burundi by air must quarantine for seven days, an increase from the initial 72 hours specified by authorities. Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (BJM) will remain open and all incoming and outgoing passengers must possess negative COVID-19 test results taken within 72 hours prior to travel. All travelers must take a test on arrival in Burundi, and a second test after six days in isolation. Travelers will be isolated at facilities approved by the authorities and will be transported to and from these sites by the security forces. If any traveler tests positive, the passenger and everyone traveling in their party will be placed into quarantine for 14 days at a government-designated hotel.
All land and water borders are closed. Enhanced screening measures are in place at all ports of entry. Cargo and humanitarian flights are operational. The use of social distancing and facemasks are encouraged.
Authorities could impose, extend, or otherwise amend any COVID-19-related restrictions with little or no notice.
Advice
Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements before arrival. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments. Plan for queues and delays at available shopping centers.
