CAR: Assailants attack Bangassou early Jan. 3
Armed group attacks Bangassou, CAR, early Jan. 3. At least five killed. MINUSCA and CAR security forces reportedly in control of the town.

Assailants attacked Bangassou early Jan. 3, clashing with CAR security forces. Several media reports indicate that at least five and possibly 10 rebels were killed. Unconfirmed reports indicate that two CAR security personnel were killed. United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has issued a statement indicating that the rebels are aligned to the former president, Francois Bozize. MINUSCA has also indicated that its forces and local security personnel are in control of the border town.
Heightened security measures are almost certain in the town in the coming days. Further rebel attacks are possible.
Context
The violence follows Dec. 27 presidential and legislative elections. The election period has been marred by violence and threats by armed groups, including the Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) which is viewed as aligned to Bozize, to disrupt the process. Violence and heightened political tensions are likely to persist in the coming weeks and may escalate following the release of election results and during and after any potential second-round of voting.
