Central African Republic military forces killed at least 44 rebel fighters during security operations, according to reports Jan. 25. Operations were conducted in coordination with allied forces in the village of Boyali, approximately 90 km (56 miles) from Bangui. Security forces also captured the village of Boda.

Context

Militia attacks are likely to continue in the CAR after four major militia leaders were expelled from the national government Jan. 2 due to their involvement in threatening the government and its conduct in elections. Rebels have attempted to encircle Bangui in recent weeks, prompting a state of emergency declaration Jan. 21.
