Additional dust storms are forecast in parts of northern China through at least March 28. Chinese authorities have warned that dust storms could occur in the southern Xinjiang basin, along with parts of western Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, and Shaanxi, through March 26. Sandstorms are forecast to spread eastward, potentially impacting areas of southern and eastern Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Liaoning, and northern Shandong March 26-28. Authorities in Mongolia have also warned of potential dust storms in southern parts of the country.
Dust storms can reduce visibility, leading to transport disruptions. Hazardous driving conditions are possible and could result in traffic congestion and an increase in vehicle accidents. Flight delays, diversions, and cancellations are possible at regional airports, including those serving Beijing (PEK, PKX, NAY) and Tianjin (TSN), during periods of severe dust storm activity.
