China, Mongolia: Dust storms possible in parts of northern China and southern Mongolia through at least March 21 /update 2
Strong winds may produce dust storms across parts of China and Mongolia, leading to reduced visibility through at least March 21.

Additional dust storms are possible in parts of northern China and southern Mongolia through at least March 21. The China Meteorological Administration has issued a blue alert for dust storms in parts of northwest and north-central China, including areas of western Inner Mongolia, eastern Xinjiang and southern Xinjiang basin, northern Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, northern Shaanxi, Shanxi, western Hebei, and Beijing. Conditions have generally improved in areas further to the east, with more severe impacts possible in parts of western China. Officials could update or extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days. In addition to the dust, gusty winds may cause sporadic power outages in the affected area.
Transport
In addition to posing a direct health risk to those with pulmonary or respiratory issues, large storms can disrupt air and ground transport operations due to strong winds and low visibility. Dust storms can cause hazardous driving conditions, resulting in traffic congestion and an increased frequency of accidents.
Flight delays, diversions, and cancellations are possible at regional airports during periods of severe dust storm activity. Flights at both Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Nanyan Airport (NAY) have already been impacted in recent days. Ground transport disruptions are typically severe during rush-hour periods. Poor local driving practices, such as not using headlights at night or failing to allow for a safe distance between vehicles, could compound weather-induced hazards.
Hazardous conditions may prompt school or business closures. Expect higher-than-normal employee absenteeism in the event of widespread transport disruptions. Residual business and transport disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve.
