Heightened security and additional violence are likely in northern Cote d'Ivoire following two attacks against military positions March 29. The incidents occurred in Kafolo and Tehini. The attacks left at least six people dead, including three attackers. A further five security personnel were injured. Officials reported that at least four assailants were apprehended and that the attacking group comprised approximately 60 fighters. The assailants fled with military equipment. The local security forces have initiated an operation in the impacted area to capture the militants. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attacks.

Officials could implement movement-restrictive measures in the impacted region in the coming days, such as curfews and road closures. Additional checkpoints are also possible on major routes, which could delay general road and cross-border travel. Clashes between security personnel and suspected militants are possible across the north as military force operations continue. Militants may attempt additional attacks against security and civilian interests.

Context

There is a heightened terrorism threat in northern Cote d'Ivoire. Militants operating in the wider Sahel region are active in the region and have demonstrated an intent to target the country in the past. Prior to the recent attacks, several soldiers were killed in an attack in Kafolo in June 2020.
