Albania: Essential flights in Albania resume as of April 8 following air traffic controllers' strike /update 1
Essential flights resume in Albania April 8 following air traffic controllers' strike at Tirana International Airport. Confirm flights.
Event
Authorities in Albania have indicated that essential flights have resumed at Tirana International Airport (TIA) as of the afternoon of April 8 following a strike by unionized air traffic controllers (ATCs) launched April 7. The action was in response to pay cuts related to reduced flight activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities have indicated that they have brought in ATCs from Turkey to take over control of Albanian airspace in place of the striking Albanian ATCs. TIA is the only international airport in Albania.
All commercial flights will remain suspended until the morning of April 9. Residual cargo and passenger flight disruptions will likely continue through at least April 9.
Advice
Plan accordingly for delays if traveling to, from, or transiting through TIA through at least April 9. Do not check out of accommodations until onward transportation is confirmed.
