Philippines: Officials extending COVID-19 rules in Metro Manila, surrounding areas through May 14 /update 5
Philippines extending curbs in Metro Manila, surrounding areas through May 14 due to COVID-19. Authorities to shorten curfew from May 1.
Event
Philippine officials have extended the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal, through May 14. Under MECQ, essential industries can work on-site with full capacity. Most other sectors, such as real estate and the manufacturing of nonessential goods, can operate with half their workforce. Several businesses, like tourism sites and entertainment venues, remain suspended. Stay-home orders remain in effect, except for people working in permitted industries and seeking essential goods and services. Some public transport vehicles can still operate for commuters who are allowed to leave their homes. Nonessential mass gatherings remain banned. Nonessential travel to and from the region remains suspended.
Local authorities in some localities may enforce stricter rules. Metro Manila will shorten its nightly curfew hours 22:00-04:00 from May 1. Exceptions are in place for essential workers, among others. Some Metro Manila cities, including Manila and San Juan, have reissued quarantine passes for residents to present to officials when in public.
Increased security measures remain in place across Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces to impose the curbs. Officials have set up more than 1,100 checkpoints in and around Metro Manila to enforce the protocols. Significant business and transport disruptions will likely continue.
Advice
Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by restrictions. Confirm appointments. Remain cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Make allowances for likely business disruptions.
