Afghanistan: Taliban plans three-day ceasefire from May 12 or 13
Taliban plans three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan from May 12 or 13. Militant threat remains severe.
Event
On May 10, Taliban representatives announced that the group will undertake a unilateral, three-day, nationwide ceasefire from the beginning of Eid Al-Fitr. The official start date of Eid Al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, and is likely to be either May 12 or 13. Taliban leaders plan to refrain from "offensive operations" during the three-day period. Afghan government officials did not immediately announce plans to support the ceasefire initiative, though they are likely to reciprocate.
Context
Despite the ceasefire pledge, it remains unclear whether various Taliban factions and smaller breakaway groups will abide by the decision. In addition, other militant organizations, most notably the Islamic State (IS), could still carry out attacks during the period. The Afghan government will likely continue with security operations targeting IS and other militant groups. The possibility of small-scale and mass-casualty attacks remains a concern. Although the ceasefire could encourage progress in negotiations between the Taliban and Afghan government officials, the two sides are unlikely to reach a comprehensive and lasting agreement in the near term.
