Ghana: Indefinite strike by university staff underway nationwide as of May 19

University employees on indefinite strike nationwide in Ghana over unpaid salaries as of May 19. Associated protests possible.

Informational

Event

An indefinite strike, called by members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSAUoG), is underway May 19. The SSAUoG launched the action May 18 to demand that the government pays salary arrears for the 2010-2016 period. The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) also threatened to join the mobilization from June. The SSAUoG suspended an earlier related strike in February 2021.

Associated protests by striking staff are possible in the coming days and weeks which are likely to take place around educational and governmental buildings. Police will likely deploy to any protests that occur, resulting in localized disruptions; widespread violence is not likely. However, the scale of the demonstrations and associated risk of violence will likely increase should students support the educational staff.

Advice

Monitor developments, avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution, and anticipate localized transport disruptions near possible demonstration sites. Adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
