MENA: Demonstrations showing solidarity with Palestinians remain possible across the region through at least mid-June /update 1
Protests demonstrating support and solidarity with Palestinians possible through mid-June across the Middle East and North Africa.
Event
Large rallies and demonstrations showing solidarity with Palestinians remain possible throughout the Middle East and North Africa through at least mid-June. Major Palestinian solidarity demonstrations have been occurring in major cities in Jordan, Tunisia, Libya, and Morocco. The protests have been occurring following violence and amid heightened tensions between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Gaza-based militants in the Gaza Strip. While the Israeli government and militant groups in the Gaza Strip have signed a ceasefire agreement, the possibility of further violence remains.
The largest rallies will likely occur in Palestinian communities in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, particularly at or near Palestinian refugee camps, UN offices, Israeli representative offices, and main squares. Smaller rallies are likely in other major population centers throughout the region.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. Exercise caution around major public squares, sites associated with Palestinian nationalism, and areas with large numbers of Palestinian refugees. In the case of large-scale protests, allow extra time for travel through impacted areas. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks; wait for authorities to remove them. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed the advice of authorities, including officers at security checkpoints. Plan accordingly for potential disruptions to ground travel, especially in capital cities.
