Philippines: Officials to continue general community quarantine in Metro Manila, surrounding areas until at least June 15 /update 7

General community quarantine to remain in force in Metro Manila and surrounding areas of the Philippines until at least June 15.

Critical

Event

Authorities in the Philippines have extended general community quarantine (GCQ) protocols, the third-strictest level of rules, in Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal, until at least June 15 amid continued COVID-19 activity. Other heightened restrictions, such as the ongoing suspension of nonessential travel to and from the region, will also remain in force for the same period. Nonessential mass gatherings will remain banned; however, religious services can take place provided they comply with certain protocols, such as capping attendance at 10 percent of the venue's capacity. Indoor dining at restaurants remains capped at half the establishment's seating capacity. Outdoor tourist locations can operate at up to 30 percent of normal capacity. Entertainment facilities, including internet cafes and amusement parks, as well as meeting and conference venues, remain closed. Public transport can operate at a reduced capacity; social distancing of 1 meter (3 feet) between passengers is required on public transportation.

Authorities in some localities within the region will continue to enforce stricter rules. Metro Manila has implemented a nightly 22:00-04:00 curfew. Exceptions are in place for essential workers as well as for certain specific circumstances. Some Metro Manila cities, including Manila and San Juan, have reissued quarantine passes for residents to present to officials when in public.

Increased security will probably remain in place across Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces for the duration of the controls. Officials have set up more than 1,100 checkpoints in and around Metro Manila to enforce the protocols. Significant business and transport disruptions will likely continue.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by restrictions. Confirm appointments. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Make allowances for likely business disruptions.
