South Africa: Disruptions to Metrobus services continue in Johannesburg May 28 due to ongoing strike action /update 2

Disruptions to Metrobus services continue in Johannesburg, South Africa, as of May 28 due to ongoing strike action.

Warning

Event

Metrobus transportation workers affiliated with the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (DEMAWUSA) are continuing their strike action as of May 28. The strike, over various issues, including salary demands, has impacted services since early May. Metrobus has stated that it will explore court interdicts to halt the indefinite strike action.

The strike will almost certainly increase congestion on alternative forms of public transport as commuters seek other transport arrangements.

Striking workers may participate in protests near bus depots and bus stations. Gatherings near the Johannesburg Metropolitan Bus Company office and the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality complex in Braamfontein are also possible. Security forces are likely to deploy to any protests that materialize. Clashes between protesters and the police are possible if demonstrators engage in acts of public violence or are overly disruptive. Higher-than-normal employee absenteeism is possible in places.

Advice

Reconfirm the status of Metrobus and other available ground transport services before departure. Plan for delays on alternative services. Exercise caution near potential protest areas. Avoid all protests. Should demonstrations materialize leave the area immediately.
