Afghanistan: At least six security officers killed due to Taliban attack on a military facility in Baghlan Province, June 10

The Taliban claims responsibility for an attack in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan, early June 10, that killed at least six people.

Warning

Event

A militant attack occurred in the Bagh-e-Shamal area of Pol-e- Khomri city in Baghlan Province, at approximately 02:00 June 10. A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) exploded near an army recruiting center, killing at least six security personnel and wounding ten others. The official casualty count may increase in the coming hours. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the incident. Officials state that security operations are underway - mainly along the Baghlan-Samangan section of the Asian Highway 76 - to clear additional improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Heightened security is likely to continue in the area, especially due to escalating militant violence across Baghlan Province. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible in and around Pol-e Khomri city through at least June 10.

The incident site is located approximately 86 km (53 miles) west-southwest of Kunduz city.

Context

Militant attacks have increased across Afghanistan, with the Taliban seizing or claiming control in additional rural territories. Significant fighting has occurred in the Baghlani Jadid District of Bhaglan Province, where government forces recently surrendered to the Taliban after the fall of at least six military bases in the Shahr-e-Kohna area. Islamic State (IS) also claimed responsibility for a shooting attack on a UK-based aid agency compound that killed over ten aid workers in Baghlani Jadid Disrict late June 8. Additional militant attacks by various armed outfits, mainly targeting government and security facilities, are likely. Shooting attacks and small bombings targeting foreign assets and personnel are possible, though major attacks are unlikely.

Advice

Avoid the area until security forces give the all-clear. Plan for increased security and ground transport disruptions in the vicinity. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
