Afghanistan: Protests ongoing in Fayzabad as of June 10; additional gatherings possible

Residents are protesting in Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan Province, as of June 10, to denounce electricity costs, water shortages, and ongoing violence in the area. Protests have been ongoing since June 8. Clashes between protesters and security personnel occurred June 8 when residents held a protest march; at least three people were killed and dozens of others wounded. Additional protests are possible in the coming days. The largest gatherings are likely outside the Badakhshan Governor’s Office. Bigger gatherings will probably involve hundreds of people.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and more try to break up more disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Protests are likely to result in localized transport and business disruptions.
