The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that targeted the police headquarters in Balkh city during the afternoon of June 6. The blast, which was caused by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED), destroyed or damaged several structures, killing at least two people and injuring about 15 others. Initial reports indicated that gunfire may have occurred following the detonation; however, no firefights have been confirmed in the area. Official casualty counts could rise.
Numerous security personnel have deployed to the incident site. Authorities have imposed checkpoints on roadways in and around the city center. Localized business and transport disruptions are likely in and around Balkh city through at least early June 7.
Balkh city is located approximately 20 km (12 miles) west-northwest of the administrative capital of Balkh Province, Mazar-e-Sharif.
