Event

Heightened security is likely on the border between Kyrgyzstan's Batken Province and Tajikistan's Sughd Region through at least mid-July following a shooting incident, July 8. At least one Kyrgyz border guard was killed during that incident, while two others were injured and detained by Tajik security forces. Authorities from each country have released conflicting versions of events; Kyrgyz authorities deny their personnel crossed the border.

Security-related disruptions are likely in the area in the coming days; checkpoints may be erected on roads near the shared border. Any further violence will pose an incidental physical threat to bystanders.

Advice

Consider avoiding nonessential travel to the affected area until the situation has calmed. Exercise caution in Kyrgyz-Tajik border areas of Batken Province and Sughd Region in the coming days. Allow additional time for travel; carry relevant identification documents, and remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security forces. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a confrontation.
