Philippines: Officials extend GCQ-HR in Metro Manila through Aug.5, enforce stricter ECQ restrictions Aug. 6-20 /update 13

Philippines extends GCQ-HR in Metro Manila through Aug.5 and will enforce stricter ECQ restrictions Aug. 6-20. Disruptions likely.

Critical

Event

Officials will impose the strictest Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) restrictions in Metro Manila Aug. 6-20 to curb the spread of COVID-19; tighter General Community Quarantine with Heightened Restrictions (GCQ-HR) will remain in effect through Aug. 5. Under the GCQ-HR, some workplaces and public places may operate but with tighter limits than typical GCQ protocols. Food establishments may only offer takeaway and delivery services. Public transport can operate at a reduced capacity with health protocols, such as maintaining social distancing of 1 meter (3 feet) between passengers. Only authorized individuals may travel into and out of Metro Manila and the surrounding Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal provinces.

A nightly curfew of 22:00-04:00 remains in place; exceptions are likely for people seeking medical help, among others. Nonessential mass gatherings remain banned. Children aged five and above are not allowed in public areas; exemptions are in place for approved locations like parks and playgrounds. Indoor sports and gyms remain suspended. Indoor tourist sites and entertainment venues like bars and concert halls must close. Personal care services and outdoor tourist attractions may operate at 30-percent capacity.

Increased security will probably remain in place across Metro Manila for the duration of the controls. Officials have set up checkpoints in and around Metro Manila to enforce the protocols. Significant business and transport disruptions will likely continue. Authorities may introduce further restrictions at short notice depending on COVID-19 activity.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by restrictions. Confirm appointments. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Make allowances for likely business disruptions.
