South Africa: Heightened security in Nkandla and on roads leading to the area, July 4 /update 1
Heightened security in and on routes leading to Nkandla, South Africa, July 4. Large crowds gathering in support of the former president.
Event
Security forces have deployed to Nkandla and surrounding areas, July 4. The deployment is in response to the presence of large numbers of supporters of former president Jacob Zuma in the area. Media reports indicate that crowds are attempting to gather at the site ahead of Zuma's scheduled 18:00 public address. Police have reportedly blocked some roads leading to the site. Some of those gathered at the site are armed and celebratory fire has been reported.
Heightened security measures are almost certain to remain in place in Nkandla through mid-July. Confrontations between security personnel and Zuma supporters or members of the pro-Zuma uMkonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) remain possible. Many Zuma supporters are reportedly armed. Disruptions along major road routes leading to Nkandla are also likely to persist. These could be caused by slow-moving convoys or protests.
Context
Zuma was found guilty of contempt of court by the Constitutional Court of South Africa, June 29. Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment and had been given five days to present himself to the Nkandla Police Station or the Johannesburg Central Police Station. However, a subsequent July 3 appeal by Zuma has been accepted by the court which will now hear the matter, July 12.
Advice
Consider avoiding travel to or near Nkandla in the coming days. Avoid all large protests and concentrations of security personnel. Heed the instructions of the security forces. Liaise with trusted contacts for regular updates if operating in Kwazulu-Natal Province.
