Cuba: Opposition calls for nationwide strike beginning Aug. 13; protests possible
Cuban opposition declares indefinite nationwide strike beginning Aug. 13; heightened security likely, protests and disruptions possible.
Event
Members of the Cuban opposition both in the country and abroad have called for an indefinite nationwide strike in Cuba beginning Aug. 13. While details regarding the strike are unclear, activists have said that the action should continue until the government meets their demands, which include increased international aid for the island and greater civil liberties.
The government is almost certain to reject the opposition's demands and security forces are likely to attempt to forcibly disperse any related protest activity. It is unclear how many people will take part in the strike following a crackdown on anti-government protests in July. However, if a significant number of people participate in the strike, protests on a scale similar to those seen last month are possible. Any demonstrations or strike activity that occur could result in localized disruptions to transport and services. A worsening of ongoing goods shortages is likely if the strike extends over the medium term.
Context
The July 11 protests were the largest in Cuba in approximately three decades. However, the demonstrations were quickly repressed by security forces. Hundreds of protesters were reportedly arrested and courts have already sentenced many demonstrators in summary trials. The government also responded with limited measures intended to ease the island's ongoing humanitarian crisis, including waiving customs fees for foodstuffs and medicines brought by international arrivals and the formal legalization of small and medium-sized businesses. Cuba is currently experiencing its worst wave of COVID-19 infections, exacerbated by chronic goods shortages, including of medicine and medical equipment.
Advice
Avoid the vicinity of any protests or demonstrations; anti-government unrest will likely provoke a response from security forces. Plan for service disruptions should participation in the strike reach significant levels.
