Informational

Event

Drivers represented by the National Federation of Trade Unions and Employees in Lebanon, FENASOL, and the Drivers' Syndicate in the Port of Beirut plan to launch a strike from 06:00 Aug. 31 to demand higher wages. FENASOL and other union leaders have threatened to escalate the strike action if their demands are not met by Sept. 2.

Striking drivers will probably stage demonstrations as part of the work stoppage. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely; protesters could block roads in and out of the port and surrounding areas. Clashes are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport disruptions and possible road closures near any demonstrations and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
