China: Further protests possible at Evergrande offices nationwide through late-September
Further protests possible at Evergrande offices nationwide in China through late September. Tight security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
Additional protests are possible at Evergrande offices nationwide through late September amid heightened concerns over the real estate company's reported debt and liquidity crisis. Around 100 protesters gathered at the Evergrande office in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, to demand the repayment of loans and financial products Sept. 16. Police reportedly detained at least two individuals during the action. Demonstrators gathered at the housing bureau in Shenzhen's Nansha District Sept. 11; additional gatherings at other Evergrande offices in several other cities across China have occurred in recent days.
Future protests could devolve into skirmishes between protesters and police, especially if authorities do not approve the demonstration. Authorities will likely increase security at protest sites. Localized transport disruptions may occur near any protests that materialize. Although traffic control measures are unlikely, police could establish checkpoints or detours near protest activity.
Advice
Avoid any gatherings due to the potential for violence. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions.
