Lebanon: Drivers at the Port of Beirut continue to strike as of Sept. 8

Drivers at the Port of Beirut in Lebanon continue to strike as of Sept. 8. Protests, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Drivers represented by the National Federation of Trade Unions and Employees in Lebanon, FENASOL, and the Drivers' Syndicate in the Port of Beirut continue to strike as of Sept. 8. The action has been taken in response to authorities failing to meet their demands of higher wages. Unionized drivers previously held similar action on Aug. 31. FENASOL and other union leaders have stated their intention to strike indefinitely if authorities fail to meet their demands.

Striking drivers will probably stage demonstrations as part of the work stoppage. Increased security, localized transport, and freight disruptions are likely; protesters could block roads in and out of the port and surrounding areas. Clashes are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport disruptions and possible road closures near any demonstrations and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
