Informational

Event

Drivers represented by the National Federation of Trade Unions and Employees in Lebanon, FENASOL, and the Drivers' Syndicate in the Port of Beirut plan to launch a strike from 06:00 Sept. 6. The planned action has been taken in response to authorities failing to meet their demands of higher wages. Unionized drivers' previously held similar action on Aug. 31. FENASOL and other union leaders have threatened an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.

Striking drivers will probably stage demonstrations as part of the work stoppage. Increased security, localized transport, and freight disruptions are likely; protesters could block roads in and out of the port and surrounding areas. Clashes are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport disruptions and possible road closures near any demonstrations and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
