Slovenia: Further demonstrations likely in Ljubljana after violent protest Sept. 29 /update 1

Activists likely to stage further demonstrations in Ljubljana, Slovenia, against COVID-19 restrictions after violent protest Sept. 29.

Warning

Event

Further disruptive protests are likely in the coming weeks following recent demonstrations against government COVID-19 restrictions. Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters at such protests, most recently on Sept. 29, when thousands of people protested on Republic Square, blocked the capital’s northern ring road, and threw stones, bottles, and other missiles; several arrests were made. Approximately 7,000-10,000 people were estimated to have taken part in the Sept. 29 demonstration, suggesting that the COVID-19-related protest movement retains widespread support.

Slovenia's COVID-19 restrictions have met with opposition from several civil society groups. Further related protests are likely outside government buildings, including the National Assembly building, and in central squares, such as Congress Square, Preseren Square, and Republic Square; large-scale protests often occur on Wednesdays, though can take place at any time. Attendance at such events could reach the low thousands. Large numbers of people and associated security measures would likely prompt localized traffic and public transport disruptions around any demonstrations. Authorities could attempt to disperse demonstrators who become disruptive and clashes between demonstrators and police are possible.

Advice

Exercise caution near potential protest venues and avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution. Heed instructions from authorities and leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations in central Ljubljana during protests.
