Context

The western border region bore the brunt of the violence during the country's 2010-2011 conflict. There have been sporadic deadly village raids and clashes between gunmen and security forces along the porous 700-kilometer (435 miles) border with Liberia since. However, both Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia have shown a commitment to improving security along their shared border. They have carried out joint military operations to drive out militias and other armed elements from these areas.
