Informational

Event

Activists in parts of Latin America intend to protest on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Nov. 25. Commemorative and educational events related to the day are also likely in most Latin American capitals.

The largest demonstrations will likely occur in the following locations:

  • Mexico City, Mexico: March from the Angel of Independence Monument to Plaza de la Constitucion from 16:00

  • Mexico City, Mexico: Monument to the Revolution from 15:00

  • Asuncion, Paraguay: Plaza Uruguaya from 17:00

  • Santiago, Chile: March from Plaza Baquedano, also known as Plaza de la Dignidad, to Mujeres en la Memoria Monument from 18:00

  • Quito, Ecuador: Plaza Indoamerica from 10:00

  • Caracas, Venezuela: Plaza Caracas from 10:00

Protests and marches related to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women have also taken place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and in Montevideo, Uruguay, in previous years; gatherings in these locations are likely Nov. 25. Protests along main avenues and squares are possible in other capital cities.

Several hundred to several thousand people could attend demonstrations, causing localized transportation disruptions. Clashes are unlikely, but low-level confrontations could occur if police use force to disperse gatherings.

Advice

Consider avoiding the vicinity of protests due to the potential for street closures, traffic congestion, and security disturbances. Allow extra time if commuting to or from downtown areas in large cities with known rallies planned. Check public transit schedules for possible service changes if large demonstrations materialize.
