Bangladesh: Victory Day celebration to occur nationwide Dec. 16

Bangladesh to celebrate Victory Day Dec. 16. Tight security, localized disruptions likely, especially in Dhaka. Security incidents possible.

Warning

Event

Bangladesh will celebrate its 50th Victory Day Dec. 16. Official events will occur at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and the National Parade Square in Dhaka and the National Martyrs' Monument in Savar. Smaller ceremonies will occur in major cities and district headquarters throughout the country.

Officials are implementing tight security measures around all Victory Day events, especially in the Dhaka area. Police will likely close several roads near National Parade Square. Localized transport disruptions are highly likely during ceremonies. While authorities have not publicized any specific threat to the holiday, Islamist militant groups operating in the country may try to stage symbolic attacks on or around Dec. 16, given its national significance. Authorities will likely boost security as a precaution at crowded commercial and public spaces, transport hubs, government buildings, and other sites commonly identified as militant targets.

Opposition parties and other groups may use the holiday to hold street marches and public rallies, prompting further localized traffic disruptions. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Officials may disperse any demonstrations that violate COVID-19 protocols.

Advice

Exercise caution and avoid Victory Day events, demonstrations, and large crowds Dec. 16 where possible. Limit exposure to sites commonly identified as potential terror targets, including prominent government buildings, western diplomatic missions, police and military installations, major markets, bus and rail stations, and places of worship. Plan for detours and significant traffic congestion around Victory Day events if operating in major cities. Heed all instructions from security personnel. Plan for government and widespread business closures.
