Ghana: Security curfew amended in Bawku, Upper East Region, as of Dec. 31 /update 2
Officials amend security-related curfew due to shooting in Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana, as Dec. 31.
Event
As of Dec. 31, authorities have amended the 18:00-06:00 security-related curfew implemented in the Bawku area, Upper East Region, due to a shooting in the city on Nov. 27, that left at least one individual dead. The curfew now applies 20:00-06:00. Even outside curfew hours, people present in the affected areas are prohibited from carrying weapons, ammunition, or any other similar material. Local authorities may also enact additional restrictive measures.
An increased security presence, as well as movement and commercial disruptions, is likely to persist in the affected area. Locals opposed to the measure could stage protests; police will likely move forcefully to disperse any gatherings that may materialize.
Context
The Bawku area curfew is one of several ongoing curfews implemented in the center and north of the country. Several longstanding curfews remain in place due to insecurity. These are listed below:
Kandiga and Doba (Upper East Region): 18:00-06:00.
Bimbilla and Kpatinga (Northern Region): 00:00-04:00.
Saboba (Northern Region): 22:00-04:00
Chereponi (North East Region): 22:00-04:00.
Bunkpurugu (North East Region): 20:00-06:00.
Alavanyo and Nkonya (Oti Region): 18:00-06:00.
Drobo, Japekrom, Babianiha, Kwasibourkrom, Mpuasu, Basekrom, Kojokesekrom, and Katakyiekrom (Bono Region): 20:00-05:00.
