A building fire near the Nishi-Umeda Station in Kita Ward, Osaka, Dec. 17, has reportedly caused at least 27 casualties. The blaze reportedly started around 10:20; the cause of the fire is not immediately clear. Although emergency crews have controlled the fire, rescue operations continue as several people are reportedly trapped in the affected building. Additional casualties are possible. Traffic and rail disruptions continue.

Authorities will probably maintain heightened security in the area in the coming hours. Prolonged localized traffic disruptions are likely; officials may also close roads in the area to facilitate emergency operations. Rail service disruptions along the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line and connected lines serving the Osaka Station may occur through the afternoon. Business disruptions are possible in the vicinity. Lingering disruptions are possible until investigations and clearance operations end.
