Clashes kill at least two people at Burj al-Shamali refugee camp near Tyre, Lebanon, Dec. 12; increased security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Armed clashes were reported during a funeral at the Burj al-Shamali refugee camp near Tyre Dec. 12, killing at least two and wounding several more. The funeral was being held for a prominent member of Hamas who died as a result of a series of explosions at a weapons depot in the same area Dec. 10. Unconfirmed reports suggest the clashes occurred between members of Hamas and Fatah. The cause of the confrontation is not clear.

Lebanese security forces were already implementing tight security measures around the camp following the Dec. 10 incident. These will likely be further tightened following the clashes at the funeral. Increased security measures will almost certainly result in transport and business disruptions in the affected area.

Advice

Avoid the affected area. Prepare for lingering transport and business disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the incident site.
