Officials enforcing an indefinite 19:00-06:00 nightly curfew in Honiara, Solomon Islands, as of Nov. 26 amid continuing protests.
Event
Authorities are enforcing an indefinite 19:00-06:00 nightly curfew in Honiara as of Nov. 26 amid ongoing protests. Officials only allow security forces and other essential personnel to move within Honiara during curfew hours; people who are not traveling within the city for essential reasons during curfew hours will be prosecuted. Violent protests have been ongoing since Nov. 24; protests have set multiple buildings on fire, including one near Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's residence Nov. 26. Looting has also been reported in some areas. Other protest sites have included the Chinatown area and Parliament House. Police have used force to disperse protests, including firing tear gas.
Officials have cancelled all flights through Nov. 27, though authorities may extend the cancellations if violence continues. The Australian government has deployed dozens of security personnel to help maintain order; the Papua New Guinea government also announced that it will send security forces to the Solomon Islands.
Security forces will likely deploy to areas where additional protests are likely, especially in Honiara, such as Parliament House, the Prime Minister's Residence, the Chinese Embassy, and Chinatown. Officials will likely try to disperse protests that break out; clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible. Protests and related security measures will likely result in localized transport and business disruptions. Flight suspensions and resultant disruptions will likely remain as long as protests continue.
Context
Violent protests broke out in Honiara after activists from Malaita Province reportedly tried to storm Parliament House after gathering outside the building Nov. 24. Protesters were calling for Sogavare's resignation over several grievances. Despite authorities previous enacting a nightly curfew active through 07:00 Nov. 26, violent protests have continued. Additional civil unrest will likely continue in the coming days.
Advice

Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Confirm flights and business appointments in advance. Abide by the conditions of the curfew. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
