Uruguay: Unionized transportation workers to strike nationwide Dec. 17 and Dec. 23

Unionized transport workers to strike across Uruguay Dec. 17 and Dec. 23. Transport disruptions likely; related protests, clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized transportation workers in Uruguay, notably including workers affiliated with the National Union of Transportation Workers and Laborers (Union Nacional de Obreros y Trabajadores del Transporte, UNOTT), plan to hold two nationwide 24-hour strikes Dec. 17 and Dec. 23. The union has reportedly organized the labor actions to demand better wages for transportation workers. Participants plan to halt all interdepartmental bus transport services Dec. 17. The second 24-hour strike, scheduled Dec. 23, is also aimed at stopping all interdepartmental bus transport; however, UNOTT may expand the scope of the strike by calling for a suspension of all public transport services Dec. 23.

Demonstrations are likely in conjunction with the planned strikes; police will probably deploy to all related rallies. Planned disruptions to transportation services will likely result in increased traffic congestion and heightened demand for alternative modes of transport in some areas.

Context

UNOTT carried out a 24-hour strike Dec. 10 that resulted in clashes in Montevideo's Tres Cruces area. Police officers reportedly fired rubber bullets to disperse protesters.

Advice

Plan for disruptions to transportation services and likely increased traffic congestion in Uruguay during the strike periods. Confirm all appointments scheduled during the labor stoppages and allot additional time to reach destinations. Heed instructions issued by local authorities.
