Authorities confirmed late Jan. 20 that an explosion in the village of Apiate, located near Bogoso, left at least 17 people dead and over 57 injured. Officials estimate more than 500 buildings were also destroyed in the blast. Recovery efforts are ongoing and casualty figures are likely to be updated over the coming days. According to an initial police investigation, the explosion occurred after a motorcycle collided with a truck carrying mining explosives.

Localized business and traffic disruptions are likely in the area over the coming days as emergency operations continue.

Bogoso is located 134 km (83 miles) southwest of Kumasi.
