Solomon Islands: Officials to enforce a 60-hour lockdown in Honiara from 18:00 Jan. 19 due to COVID-19 concerns

Authorities order 60-hour lockdown in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from 18:00 Jan. 19 amid COVID-19 concerns. Plan for business disruptions.

Critical

Event

Authorities will enforce a 60-hour lockdown in Honiara from 18:00 Jan. 19 due to COVID-19 activity. The restrictions likely apply in an area from Poha to Alligator Creek, encompassing the capital city. Under the lockdown, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force will require that all residents remain in their homes, except workers in essential services and emergency response, including medical workers, police and health officers, and civil servants in relevant ministries. Residents must apply for exceptions, and police could issue fines for ignoring the order. All public gatherings are suspended. Officials are requiring facemasks when in public and limiting capacity on public transport.

According to local reports, businesses in the capital closed at noon, and residents were purchasing essential goods leading to long queues at markets. Significant commercial disruptions are likely throughout the lockdown period, as officials will close all businesses. Authorities also plan to block transport in and out of the affected area. Vessels cannot depart for provincial destinations. Officials have also suspended outbound domestic flights from Honiara International Airport (HIR) during the lockdown period. Shipping delays are highly likely through at least Jan. 24, though lingering disruptions are possible.

Advice

Seek an exception to lockdown orders to conduct business-critical activities. Follow all official instructions. Remain nonconfrontational if stopped by police. Plan for queues and delays at available shopping centers. Reschedule business appointments. Consider adjusting itineraries for time-sensitive travel or prepare to shelter in place in Honiara until authorities lift lockdown orders.
