Chile: Further protests by truckers likely, Feb. 12, and possible in the coming days

Further disruptive protests by truckers are likely, particularly in central and northern Chile Feb. 12 and possibly in the coming days. The demonstrations, which escalated Feb. 11, are in response to the killing of a trucker in Antofagasta Feb. 10; three Venezuelan nationals have been arrested in connection with the murder. Senior government and security officials flew to Antofagasta Feb. 12, to negotiate with protest leaders.

Approximately 30 flights connecting Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL) in Santiago to Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) were canceled Feb. 11. Flights between the two airports remain suspended Feb. 12; protesters reportedly remain in place near IQQ. Protests were also reported near Andres Sabella Galvez International Airport (ANF), Feb. 11. Route 68 connecting Santiago and Valparaiso was disrupted Feb. 11. Protests have reportedly continued along major road routes in the area Feb. 12.

Heightened security is likely near all trucker protests and roadblocks. Clashes between protesters and the security forces may occur, particularly if protests persist. Protests may escalate if negotiations between government and demonstration leaders fail. Protests can occur along major road routes and near airports, government buildings, and in major cities.
