Informational

Event

Land transport unions canceled the remainder of the planned Feb. 2-4 strike, Feb. 3. Unions were advocating for better working conditions in compliance with an agreement made with the prime minister in 2021. The unions have announced that strike action could resume in mid-February.

Context

On Feb. 2, land transport union strikes and protests resulted in major traffic disruptions. Unionized land transport sector employees have routinely held protests and associated strikes due to various grievances. Among the most common has been rising fuel prices caused by governments cessation of state subsidies. This decision has come amid an ongoing economic crisis. The value of the country's currency has plummeted by over 90 percent since 2019; essential goods, basic commodities, and services are increasingly difficult to access.
