Mali: Further protests likely nationwide through mid-March

Further protests are likely across Mali, including Bamako, through mid-March. Avoid all demonstrations.

Informational

Event

Further protests are likely across Mali, including Bamako, through at least mid-March, following Feb. 19 protest in Bamako. On Feb. 19, activists gathered in Bamako to celebrate the announcement of the future withdrawal of French Barkhane forces. Participants reportedly burnt the European flag, with some demonstrators carrying anti-French and pro-Russian placards. Protests are possible in Bamako and other urban centers across the country.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in areas where protests materialize. Police may attempt to forcibly disperse the demonstration, particularly if protesters cause significant disruptions. Clashes cannot be ruled out.

Context

On Feb. 17, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the withdrawal of French troops from Mali after a breakdown in relations with Mali's ruling military junta. France intervened in Mali in 2013 to combat the jihadist insurgency. It currently has around 4,600 troops stationed across the Sahel, 2,400 of them in Mali.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and large concentrations of police as a precaution. Plan for ground transport disruptions; consider taking alternative routes to circumvent protest-affected areas. Heed instructions issued by local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
