Moldova: US Department of State warns against travel to Moldova as of Feb. 14

Event

The US Department of State issued a travel advisory Feb. 14 warning against travel to Moldova due to unusual Russian military movements on the border with Ukraine, as well as COVID-19-related issues. In particular, the US government is advising any of its citizens who may be in the Russian-backed breakaway Transnistria region to leave immediately via commercial or private means.

Context

Tensions remain high between Russia and Ukraine amid continued Russian troop deployments to areas bordering Ukraine. The military movements bolster the personnel and equipment previously positioned in parts of southwestern Russia, Belarus, and the Crimean peninsula. Russia has long maintained a force of about 1,500 troops in Moldova's Transnistria region; it is unclear whether the Kremlin has also increased this particular presence as part of its general deployments near Ukraine. In recent days, several amphibious assault ships and other naval vessels have entered the Black Sea to participate in naval exercises set to conclude Feb. 20.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Moldova, including around government buildings, security installations, and military outposts; reconsider any travel to the Transnistria region. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
