Chile: Protests ongoing in Iquique March 14; disruptions reported at Iquique Diego Aracena International Airport
Protest in Iquique causes traffic disruptions and delays at Iquique Diego Aracena International Airport March 14.
Event
Protesting truck drivers are blocking main roads around the municipalities of Iquique and Alto Hospicio in Tarapaca Region March 14. The demonstrators have reportedly blocked Ruta 1 and Ruta 16, also blocking traffic between the two municipalities and the local airport. At least four departing flights have been canceled at Iquique Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) due to the protest early March 14. Participants are protesting the alleged deterioration of security due to the presence of Venezuelan migrants
Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor gatherings. Security personnel will likely use force to disperse any unruly crowds. Road freight and business disruptions are likely to continue in the coming hours. Protests are also possible in other locations in Tarapaca, including Aymara, and Colchane. Further delays and cancelations at IQQ are possible for the duration of the protests.
Context
Several anti-immigration demonstrations in the region have been reported in recent months. In previous demonstrations, participants burned items and tents belonging to immigrants in protest against the alleged illegal presence of Venezuelans in the country.
Advice
As a precaution, avoid all demonstrations. Leave the area at the first sign of confrontations. Use alternative routes to avoid rally venues; allow additional time to reach destinations. Confirm all flights traveling via IQQ.
